Ashendon War Memorial - the men behind the names  

Have you ever wondered about the men behind the name on the war memorial? There are five names; two from the First World War and three from the Second. Sian Miller has kindly researched the life and service of one of those men, Walter Ewers, and submitted this article. The article is based on information to hand at the present time but, if you have any additional information, please submit it to Sian (sian@impetus.co.uk) and she will arrange to have the article updated. Similarly, if you have any information on those others who names appear (they are listed after the item on Walter) please submit it so that we can provide as much information as possible on them.

Native of North Leigh, Oxon. Buried in POTIJZE CHATEAU WOOD CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot/Row/Section C. Grave 15.
EWERS Walter

[Listed on memorial as Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry] Private 73304, 5th Battalion, Machine GUn Corps (Infantry). Died 28th August 1918. Aged 21. Son of George and E. C. Ewers, of Pollicott, Thame, Oxon. Buried in MORY ABBEY MILITARY CEMETERY, MORY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot IV. Row B. Grave 25.

JOHNSON George Henry

Signalman 2598576, 142 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery Signal Section, Royal Corps of Signals. Died 31st JUly 1944. Aged 22. Son of William Henry and Beatrice Ada Johnson. Buried in CASERTA WAR CEMETERY, Italy. Plot I. Row C. Grave 11.
LONG Albert John

Private 5389165, 1st Battalion, Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Died 13th August 1944. Aged 28. Son of Arthur Thomas Long and Edith Ellen Long, of Ashendon. Buried in NNEVILLE-LA-CAMPAGNE WAR CEMETERY, Calvados, France. Plot III. Row C. Grave 13.
